    World’s First Autonomous Vehicle Regulations

    Project Title: Regulatory Structure to Support Autonomous Vehicles Upon Public Roadways

     

    Project Description: The State of Nevada was the first jurisdiction to pass legislation to enable the operation of autonomous vehicles upon public roadways. The legislation required regulations to be developed to outline the operational and testing procedures and requirements to allow companies and individuals to be licensed to test and operate these emerging technology vehicles.

    Business Scenario

     

    Consultant’s Role: Consultant was the team lead for developing the regulatory structures for this emerging technology. As this was something that had never existed prior, no roadmap existed to use as a template.

    Approach

     

    Consultant led the team in research and collaborative efforts with stakeholders including vehicle manufacturers, technology companies, legal overseers, insurance industry representatives, public safety and health officials and economic diversity interests. Consultant was able to bring all parties together to agree on the final proposed regulations which were adopted by the legislature with enthusiasm.

     

    Project Benefits: The benefits from this project are quite significant in that the regulations that were developed and adopted have been studied and modified over the last few years to account for new advances in technologies impacting the operation of autonomous vehicles. This was clearly a ground breaking project impacting transportation as a whole well into the future.

    Project Description: The creation of a specialized driver’s license to enable disabled people to operate technologically advanced vehicles on public roadways

    Business Scenario

     

    Consultant’s Role: Consultant was engaged in discussions with Arrow Electronics regarding autonomous vehicle testing. Consultant learned that the project involved a quadriplegic driver that operated the test vehicle by using head movements and actions. Consultant was moved to find a way to restore mobility options to disabled persons to improve their quality of life.

    Project Description: Deployment of a mmWave network in the city of San Jose, California with an emphasis on streamlining city processes, site surveys and planning including site preparation for deployments.
